Out of the Box Software for Cabinet
Manufacturing?
What if I told you that there was a
software available now that will build cabinets correctly to
industry standards right out of the box for most frame and frameless
construction methods? What if it had huge libraries full of cabinets
and accessories that were already setup, stretchable and ready to
drag and drop into a job? What if it included most popular hardware
systems fully setup and functional? What if it would cut a nest of
true mortise and tenon parts on a CNC router that fully compensated
for material thickness variations and required no secondary
operations for assembly?
When David Hilker bought CV Solid he saw
the awesome potential, but he was concerned by the amount of work
that he saw in front of him to fully extract that potential.
Nevertheless, he pressed forward with a no holds barred approach. He
paid Planit and programmers and consultants to create UCS's,
catalogs, reports and systems over a period of several years to get
what he wanted out of the software, and he wanted a lot.
You see, David wasn't out to just make
Solid work for his shop. Originally from the Midwest, David was from
a long cabinet manufacturing heritage. He had spent years learning
the standards for the industry and proven practices to manufacture
quality cabinetry in an effective manner. He decided that he was
going to make Solid build product to those standards and support
those practices, but still permit him to easily tweak or change
whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. Combining that goal with his
granular attention to detail made it a challenging project, but in
2006 he got it done and then some.
In the process of linking Solid to his
nested base router, he had studied many methods for blind dado, dado
and butt joint construction but nothing seemed as effective and high
quality as the old tried and true mortise and tenon joinery that had
been used for years in mainstream cabinet an furniture
manufacturing. The problem with that method and NBM was that there
was no way to do it in a nest without significant secondary
operations and material handling. He tried using multiple bits and
passes but there was tear out, and moving parts and bad fits due to
thickness variations. Then it dawned on him. He needed a bit that
would capture the joint and cut it completely in a way that indexed
the mortise and the tenon regardless of thickness variations. After
considerable searching it became apparent that no such bit existed.
David promptly went to a veteran toolmaker and paid to have the bit
he needed designed and manufactured. Did I say persistent earlier?
Finally, the last part of the system was in place and working to
specs.
Now, after months of testing, David is
ready to share his hard work with the rest of the industry and
hopefully recoup some of the tens of thousands of dollars that he
has invested. His system is called TenonCam, and it's a turn key
add-on system for CV Solid Manufacturing. 1Goal Technology Solutions
is extremely pleased to be working with David to roll out the
TenonCam system in the industry and support the product as it grows.
Oh, and all of that great stuff I talked
about at the beginning of this article? Yes, it does all of that and
much more and it can be installed in a couple of days. Experienced Solid
users will need little if any training to use it right away. Look
for the new TenonCam website and much more information right here,
real soon.
